Justice League Europe #14 - You Oughtta Be In Pictures

YOU OUGHTTA BE IN PICTURES JUSTICE LEAGUE EUROPE #14 Published:   3rd April 1990 Cover Date:  May 1990 Cover Artists:   Bart Sears Writer:  Keith Giffen Penciler:  Linda Medley Inker:   José Marzan, Jr. Colourist:   Gene D'Angelo Letterer:   Albert DeGuzman Editors:   Kevin Dooley / Andrew Helfer Introduction In one of those strange coincidences we're picking up with the JLE more or less where I left off last time, though to be fair I've been skipping things for a little while. Truth be told the handling of Pee Gee isn't one of my favourites and having seen them covered recently I've held back a little so I could get a little distance for a relatively fresh look at the book (hopefully). Sypnosis Seven years ago we have a relatively geeky person with his high-tech device of a video cassette recorder! When he's struck by electricity or lighting, lightning is all good for this in the DC Universe, his consciousness is somehow stuck in the device! But in a piece of

Adventures of Superman #463 - Speed Kills!

Image
Adventures of Superman #463 Speed Kills! February 1990 It's one of the classic Superman vs. Flash races, though this time it's caused by the efforts of one Mister Mxyzptlk. During the race we see various people reacting to the race. One of those is the current JLE, who at this time includes Pee Gee, she's less than keen on Wally Flash winning, which makes total sense considering how much of a pillock he is in the then-current JLE comic.

Justice League of America #183 - Where Have all the New Gods Gone?

CRISIS ON NEW GENESIS or WHERE HAVE ALL THE NEW GODS GONE?JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA #183 Published:   10th July 1980 Cover Date:  October 1980 Cover Artists:   Jim Starlin Writer:  Gerry Conway Penciler:  Dick Dillin Inker:   Frank McLaughlin Colourist:   Gene D'Angelo Letterer:   Ben Oda Editors:   Len Wein Introduction Everything these days has to be a massive crossover with the entire Multiverse in crisis, whilst in the 70s and 80s you got these (relative) low-key events where two or more teams just teamed up over both of their comics. Which I guess is weird as this involves New Genesis and Apokolips, y'know the New Gods that you'd figure would want, no need, to be in a big massive story. But somehow for me, these kinda stories have a bigger appeal, probably because right now there's a little bit of event fatigue. Synopsis We start, as with all these crossovers with the standard one-page explanation of how the JLA are from Earth-1 and the JSA on Earth-2, and becaus

Showcase #97 - Power Girl

POWER GIRL* SHOWCASE #97 *The issue's story is unnamed. Published: 15th November 1977 Cover Date: February 1978 Cover Artists: Joe Staton / Joe Orlando Writer: Paul Levitz Penciler: Joe Staton Inker: Joe Orlando Colourist: Jerry Serpe Letterer: Ben Oda Editors:   Joe Orlando Introduction So this is a little bit of a soft reboot, a DC tradition in itself, I wanted a chance to cover some of the original comics (my original content being terrible) as well as look at a wider range of comics. It's a chance to catch some of those comics in a blank spot I have in the mid-90s. But where to start? I've covered her original appearance in All-Star Comic #58 several times already, so we're best than the comics that told Power Girls' origins, only two years after she was first introduced. And as is appropriate to my soft reboot Showcase is also a soft reboot of Power Girl, making her if not softer at least a more rounded character. It's also more relevant than ever, in m

Who's Who: Update '87 #4

Who's Who: Update '87 #4 This page is a very big deal, but not for the reasons youd expect! About 3-4 years ago I got into podcasts in a big way, rapidly working my way through JLI and more importantly Who's Who. With so many podcast I began to wonder how easy it would be to make my own podcast (very difficult it seems). But who would I do my podcast about? Enter the Who's Who episode about this issue! Where Rob was going on about Pee Gee's weight, a common discussion about a lot of characters. The conversations basically go on about just how much her... assets. At that point I though, Power Girl must be more than just a series of massive boobs! So after checking around to see what else was out theere I decided to start the blog about Pee Gee... and the rest is history! Oh and F-cups are around 1,180g (2.6lbs) or as the internet tells me around the size of a  three-month-old Persian kitten!

Star(man) of wonder - Starman #18

Your Mother Should Know Starman #18 Cover Date: January 1990 Released: 28th November 1989 ⋅ Writers:  Roger Stern ⋅ Pencilers:  Tom Lyle ⋅  Inker:  Scott Hanna ⋅ Colourists:  Carl Gafford ⋅ Letterer:  Bob Pinaha ⋅ Editors:   Brian Augustyn / Katie Main   Continued from Starman #17. You can sometimes tell just how week-to-week this is by the stupid decisions that I make about how to handle the material, like how the last issue I completely skipped the soap opera parts of the story. The thing is those aspects make up some of the best parts of the story, though the superheroic aspects (and Power Girl) are incredibly solid as well. So to make amends for such an oversight I'll try to cover both halves of the story this time around. The first half of the soapy part is Starman's mom worrying about where William, Starman, is after being missing for almost half a day. His sister, Jayne, who knows about his secret, is trying to cover for him being missing, Also his mom is also still ge

Deadly Attraction Starman #17 Cover Date: December 1989 Released: 31st October 1989 ⋅ Writers:  Roger Stern ⋅ Pencilers:  Tom Lyle ⋅  Inker:  Scott Hanna ⋅ Colourists:  Carl Gafford ⋅ Letterer:  Tim Harkins ⋅ Editors:   Brian Augustyn What could be more appropriate as we barrel towards Christmas than a Star to light our way? We start with Power Girl at the Paris Embassy doing some heavy lifting of equipment, and a Wally that's actually okay! All friendly and nervous just trying to get along with Pee Gee for a change, it's a nice change of pace from the jerk Wally we normally get from the JLE. Well, that's enough of them as Kara jumps in a teleporter to o back to New York to catch a shower, unfortunately, the beam gets hijacked by someone nefarious! The said villain, one Doctor Polaris knocks Pee Gee out with a blast of energy, using these circumstances to his advantage, though I'm not sure why he plays the innocent bystander for almost a whole page especially as by th

Don't Speak French - Justice League Europe #6

No More Teachers' Dirty Looks...?! Justice League Europe #6 Cover Date: September 1989 Released: 1st August 1989 ⋅ Writers:  J.M. DeMatteis / Keith Giffen ⋅ Pencilers:  Bart Sears  ⋅  Inker:  Pablo Marcos ⋅ Colourists:  Gene D'Angelo ⋅ Letterer:  Bob Lappan ⋅ Editors:   Kevin Dooley / Andrew Helfer Power Girl wasn't in issue #5, last appearing in  Justice League #4   I've mentioned several times, in different ways that filler, or breather, issues like this one can be quite fun. But also how that leaves very little to talk about. Basically, the majority of the Justice League go to a night school to learn French, as do members of the Injustice League. Slowly the Injustice boys figure out and try to leave before the JLE finds out and a brief fight breaks out before the teacher shuts the fight down and everyone gets arrested by the police. All through the story, the teacher does your usual teacher things stopping people talking, chewing gum the usual stuff! We even get a

When in Bialya - Justice League Europe #4

Bialya Burning! Justice League Europe #4 Cover Date: July 1989 Released: 30th May 1989 ⋅ Writers:  J.M. DeMatteis / Keith Giffen ⋅ Pencilers:  Bart Sears / Keith Giffen ⋅  Inker:  Pablo Marcos ⋅ Colourists:  Gene D'Angelo ⋅ Letterer:  Albert DeGuzman ⋅ Editors:   Kevin Dooley / Andrew Helfer Continued from  Justice League Europe #3 . Normally I don't talk much about covers, I'm never sure what counts as a "good" cover, but I do appreciate how they placed the speech bubble to cover up Power Girl so Queen Bee's statement works at first glance. Of cause I can't let it pass without pointing out how few female heroes we currently have on the team! (At the moment a 100% female support staff so they have that at least!). We start by laying out everything hinted at in the last issue, that Jack O'Lantern is working for Queen Bee leader of Bialya, one of the many, many fictional Middle Eastern countries that seemed to spring up during the 80s. They also confir

Another Fine Mess! Justice League Europe #3 Cover Date: June 1989 Released: 25th April 1989 ⋅ Writers:  J.M. DeMatteis / Keith Giffen ⋅ Pencilers:  Bart Sears ⋅  Inker:  Pablo Marcos ⋅ Colourists:  Gene D'Angelo ⋅ Letterer:  Albert DeGuzman ⋅ Editors:   Kevin Dooley / Andrew Helfer Continued from  Justice League Europe #2 . We start with a quick recap of the last two issues, revealing that our heroes are clued in that those they were fighting were formally part of the Global Guardians. Flash is his normal irritating self in a, which I think of a Josie and the Pussycat moment. Yeah, I know no one cool will get this, basically, one of the characters (Alexander, no really I didn't need to look it up :D ) states she is in the movie because she was in the comic book! No, really the movie is fun, go look it up! The team basically splits into three-ish groups, a bunch of them go off and do nothing so we can ignore them! Captain Atom meets a Frenchman who's pro-JLE, his not being

Somebody Up There Hates Us! Justice League Europe #2 Cover Date: May 1989 Released: 28th March 1989 ⋅ Writers:  J.M. DeMatteis / Keith Giffen ⋅ Pencilers:  Bart Sears ⋅  Inker:  Pablo Marcos ⋅ Colourists:  Gene D'Angelo ⋅ Letterer:  Bob Lappan ⋅ Editors:   Kevin Dooley / Andrew Helfer Continued from  Justice League Europe #1 . We start on something a little unusual, Captain Atom out of costume pondering the events of the previous issue. Flying back to the embassy he jokes with Catherine about how well things are going before getting Sue's help on looking up Neo-nazis and fringe groups, apparently, Sue is the resident hacker (for the 80s at least) hence her being accepted to the help on the team. In probably the least realistic (sadly) part of this story about superheroes there are only three such groups existing, though she does look for groups with metahumans I guess? He then summons the other heroes, including our reason to be here Pee Gee who still it seems to be the CEO o

Smooches - Worlds' Finest #11

Putting it Together Worlds' Finest #11 Cover Date: June 2013 Released: 3rd April 2013 ⋅ Writers:  Paul Levitz ⋅ Pencilers:  Ken Lashley / Barry Kitson / Robson Rocha ⋅  Inker:  Ken Lashley / Barry Kitson / Wayne Faucher ⋅ Colourists:  Matt Yackey / Hi-Fi Design ⋅ Letterer:   Carlos M. Mangual ⋅ Editors:   Anthony Marques / Mike Cotton / Eddie Berganza Continued from  Worlds' Finest #10 . We start by picking up on Huntress following up on the Apocalypse Weapon Pee Gee picked up on her African adventures, investigating a weapon's warehouse in Mali. She kidnaps one of those involved in the arms trade tying him up and apparently interrogating him, though we don't see any of that. Apparently, some of that stolen Wayne money has ended up here, because now we're putting all the storylines together. Kara however is in her civilian identity as Karen Starr attending a business conference in Las Vegas, along with her long-suffering assistant Somya Spears, who as normal looks

A whole lot of shaking! - Worlds' Finest #10

Some Things You Can Change, Some You Can't... Worlds' Finest #10 Cover Date: May 2013 Released: 6th March 2013 ⋅ Writers:  Paul Levitz ⋅ Pencilers:  Kevin Maguire ⋅  Inker:  Kevin Maguire ⋅ Colourists:  Rosemary Cheetham ⋅ Letterer:   Carlos M. Mangual ⋅ Editors:   Anthony Marques / Mike Cotton / Eddie Berganza Continued from  Worlds' Finest #9 We start with Helena investigating Michael Holt, aka Mr. Terrefic, Pee Gee is investigating one of his Silicon Valley laboratories by tunneling underneath the ground and setting up a mini earthquake. It's funny to me as I've been reading old Supergirl comics and when she was still a secret she was always tunneling underground! Being a little irked at the raid on her island she is also here to cause a lot of property damage. Kara may have been a little too keen on the Earthquake as it causes an earthquake and fissure in the nearby area. Despite the desire to cause damage, she's still a hero at heart so rescues a car that

The Raid - Worlds' Finest #9

Raid Worlds' Finest #9 Cover Date: April 2013 Released: 6th February 2013 ⋅ Writers:  Paul Levitz ⋅ Pencilers:  George Pérez / Carlos Urbano / Yildiray Cinar ⋅  Inker:  George Pérez / Carlos Urbano / Yildiray Cinar /               Phil Jimenez ⋅ Colourists:  Hi-Fi Design ⋅ Letterer:   Carlos M. Mangual ⋅ Editors:   Anthony Marques / Mike Cotton / Eddie Berganza Continued from Worlds' Finest #8 . This episode is about a raid on Starr Island, it's not really more complicated than that. Though that doesn't make it a bad comic. We literally start with our high-tech raiders breaking into Kara's island offices. Still recovering is Helana who straight away suits up to stop the attack, whilst one of her arms is still in a cast. She has some success with the raiders, taking one down straight away before hiding from their hi-tech rifles. We also get Somya, Kara's long-suffering assistant, showing up and also defend the offices from these invaders. A little less dressed

Hunt and Be Hunted Worlds' Finest #8 Cover Date: March 2013 Released: 9th January 2013 ⋅ Writers:  Paul Levitz ⋅ Pencilers:  George Pérez / Carlos Urbano / Cliff Richards ⋅  Inker:  George Pérez / Carlos Urbano / Cliff Richards ⋅ Colourists:  Hi-Fi Design / Rosemary Cheetham ⋅ Letterer:   Carlos M. Mangual ⋅ Editors:   Wil Moss Continued from  Worlds' Finest #7 . This is another two-headed issue, with half the story being about Helena and half about Kara, though the stories are linked together into a single narrative. Basically, someone has put a bounty on Huntresses, due to issues in her previous solo title, being the '10 it's also very based around a "rouge" Middle Eastern nation, this time the fictional country of Kufra. It's not the most egregious of depictions, but it's still a product of its time. And boy do I feel old talking about the 2010s being something to look back upon! We start with Huntress in New York being attacked by two assailants,
