Kara in Warlord-land, part 2 - Warlord 121-124

Image
Warlord #121-1204 Cover Date:  September 1987 to October 1987 Release Date:  16th Jun 1987 to 15th Sep 1987 Warlord #121 (September 1987) The two women search the island but can't find the demon, and Kara is finally named here, they go back into the shrine to learn some learning machines to view history tapes about this demon (whose names I'm not even going to try and spell). You'd think Kara would have had enough dealing with VR considering her experiences in Showcase #99, but I guess this is an emergency after all! They find out how Arion defeated and bound the demon to the crystal before being awoken by the place apparently shaking. The sequence in the clear learning hoods has some very goofy facial expressions in what been so far been really excellent art so far. The demon is then quickly found awaking a local volcano to get the first part of a power sceptre it needs to complete its diabolic schemes. Kara flies right in, only to get zapped straight away by the staff, Mo

Kara in Warlord-land, part 1 - Warlord 116-120

Warlord #116-120 Cover Date: April 1987 to October 1987 Release Date: 15th January to 19th May 1987 When following a single character, especially at best a B-lister, through their publishing history you occasionally end up in some weird little cul-de-sacs of their Universe. Such is the case with Kara and her appearances in Warlord. Now I'm not going to dive through 115 issues to get the feel for the comic so we're going to have to rely on what the internet tells me about this comic. Basically, Skartaris is the hollow world, a world inside the Earth itself (later retconned to be in another dimension), settled at some point by Atleanians. Our titular Warlord, Travis Morgan was a US pilot who crashed in the Yukon and stumbled into the place. His machinations aren't why we're here though we're here for Kara! Warlord #116 (April 1987)   Kara appears on the very last page riding into Bandakhar, City of Thieves, looking for directions to wherever she's going. When a

Sigh, Atlantis - Secret Origins #11

Ancient Histories Secret Origins #11 Cover Date:  February 1987 Released:  13th November 1986 Half of this book is about something that doesn't exist, and I'm not talking about the Hawkman origin!  And yes now is the time I need to talk about Power Girl's post-crisis origins. With the Crisis, it was determined that Superman would be the only Kryptonian. ANd to be fair the pre-crisis universe was awash with survivors from a world that apparently exploded with (almost) everyone dying in the process. Supergirl had it the worse what with her being wiped from reality, and Power Girl only survived with this sudden change in her origin. Why she wasn't also got rid of like most of the other Earth-2 characters, like poor Helena, I'm not sure why maybe because she was so tied up with an active team (though not for long). So we start with the classic origin, dying world, desperate scientists, last hope, a surviving cousin. With poor Kara still trying to come to terms with the

Come as you aren't -- Superman/Batman #27

Nevermind Superman/Batman #27 Cover Date: August 2006 Released: 21st June 2006 Even though I'd thought I'd finished all the Pre-Crisis comics Randy Khoo on Twitter kindly pointed out a comic I didn't know about from 2006 that is ostensively set in the Pre-Crisis era. Almost immediately I tracked it down to find a rather pleasant surprise. Now technically Power Girl doesn't appear in the majority of the comic, at least in spirit, but it will become clearer as well get into the story and explain why I'm more than glad to cover the story. This is not a complicated story, not that that's a bad thing, the Ultra-Humanite has kidnapped Batman and Superman and put their mind in Huntress (Helena Wayne) and Power Girl. Our two heroes need to track their bodies down before they're forced to choose between their own minds or the dormant (but waking up) minds of our two female heroes. Whilst the comic had just come off of a long story of multiversal shenanigans, the da

Punchvergance - Convergence: Action Comics #2

Convergence: Action Comics #2 Cover Date:  July 2015 Released:  27th May 2015 We are now in the punching part of the story! And as a long time reader of this blog, I'm sure at least one person is paying attention, fight scenes are not my most favourite parts of the comic. And they're really, really difficult to describe using text. We start with Kara and Andrew sharing a moment, and a kiss before Kara flies off to fight for the city. And even though I'm not the biggest fan of the relationship, and the fact she and supes flew off the last issue it's actually a really sweet scene. I'm also contractually obliged to mention this is the only time we actually see the two kiss each other.  Whilst Huntress gets the cool fight with Superman and meets Soviet Batman (the art is a little fuzzy but great story, how it fits with Earth-2 canon is a different story. If enough people are interested I'll do my summary/review type thing) Power Girl just gets a dogfight in the ai

Domestic heroics - Convergence: Action Comics #1

Image
Convergence: Action Comics Cover Date:  June 2015 Released:  29th April 2015 In 2015 DC Comics moved its offices from the vaguely sinister 666 Fifth Avenue to a new address. To cover for the move they did a limited event that lasted two months that included eight issues of the main series and every other comic getting a two-part mini-series. All were callbacks to earlier ages and characters, many giving those characters happy endings that they couldn't in previous ages. For instance, Dick and Kori got together (as did Dick and Barbara) and Roy Harper got his daughter Lian back alive and well. The basic setup was that certain cities, through the various DC universe, had been cut off for a year with no one having powers. The main comic was about the mystery of why whilst the supplementary comics were about two cities being made to fight each other (it was billed as four, but half were obviously ringers). I say fight, but about half ended up working out a deal with each other rather t

In memoriam - Infinity Inc #30

What Private Griefs... Cover Date:  September 1986 Released:  19th June 1986 When I was talking about Aftershock, issue #11 of Crisis I mentioned how I thought there should be an issue(s) about people coming to terms with what had happened to them and all they lost. This issue here is exactly what I was talking about, a breather issue dealing with the "death" of the JSA. Not much happens in the issue, the various members of Infinity Inc tell the friends and family of the JSA about what happened to them. Everyone has different, and suitable, reactions to the news. Though being a superhero universe no one reacts to them being somewhere else. Though in places it can get a little complex as we've skipped a good year's worth of subplots between here and issue twelve. Rather than sum up the comics, which really is X gets told about Y and has a reaction to the new, for once I'm going to focus on the two pages dealing with Power Girl processing what happened to her recent

Twilight's last gleaming - Last Days of the Justice Society

Image
Last Days of the Justice Society Cover Date:  July 1986 Released:  24th April 1985 In my copy of Crisis on Infinite Earths Marv Wolfman declare that he didn't kill off the JSA in the Crisis, and he's right this is the book that killed the team and boy what a crazy ride it is! But as I'm apparently still not done with getting irked at Crisis fallout we get one doozy of a retcon. For we start with the JSA gathered at the graveside of both Helena and Dick Grayson. But I hear you say, metaphorical reader, Robin survived that disaster, didn't he? Well according to this no! Even worse we don't find out how he died during the crisis, just that between the last scene we saw him in and this funeral he somehow died. Also, the funeral mentions all the other JSAers that have been lost between their start and (then) current day. We also get the obligatory info dump about Infinity Inc and the sudden influx of new members. The plot starts off simple enough, Hitler has the Spear
