A Quick history of Starrware Industries!

From a distance, Power Girl's history seems to be consistent, but if you're an idiot who pokes at these things, you quickly notice the cracks where the pieces don't quite fit together. And that's before you get into the retcons that lead to her Atlantean origins post-Crisis.

A good example of this is Pee Gee's own company.

Let's start with how Kara started in computer software. After deciding that she needed to be more human, something she'll do several times, in Showcase #99, she learns computers from Paradise Island learning machines. She then joins Ultimate Computer Corporation (UCC,) adopting her identity of Karen Starr for the first time.

Starrware Industries #1
When next we get Power Girl in a solo series, Power Girl #1 (June 1988), she's running her own company, in the exciting world of Spreadsheet design!

After her own mini and a few appearances here and there, she flees from a board meeting to join the JLE, then the JSA for the next few years! Unlike some versions of this company, it seems to survive her absence, and we see it from the last time in 2000, from Green Lantern / Power Girl (October 2000).

Starrware Industries #2
After Infinite Crisis, we get a new Starrware, and it's actually described as a revived company in her next solo series (Power Girl #1, July 2009).

This time, the company isn't just about the exciting world of computers, but a company exploring new, futuristic ideas, making her a woman of tomorrow!

Unlike her original company, this one runs into trouble with financial shenanigans and a takeover attempt by a competitor. For a couple of issues, she loses control of her company, only between Power Girl 21 and 22, though this intertwines between a few different comics.

The company seems to last until the universe is again rebooted.

Starrware Industries #3
New universe, new Power Girl, same old company! Though introduced from her new series (Worlds' Finest #1, July 2012).

Though its just called Starr Island until issue #11, Starr Enterprises in that issue before finally using the Starrware Industries in #12, which at this point where Kara loses control of the company, thanks to Desaad, who uses Michael Holt (aka Mister Terrific's ) company as a front. She doesn't regain control of the company until issue #22, and in a sign of how rushed to end this series had become, in only four issues, she gives up the company to return home to Earth 2.

Somehow, the company seems to have survived, even though we don't see any kind of hand owner; we only see that she passes on the Power Girl identity to Tanya Spears!

The New 52 got a soft reboot into Rebirth, and we got "our" Power Girl back! Things are fuzzy because DC want to have it multiverse cake and eat it, but the Starrware we see now must be that last Starwave. So the current Power Girl has no connection to Starrware, though somehow she knows enough to access its funds.

Though that's a story for well down the line!

  1. As a computer programmer myself, I sorely wish we had more scenes of PG trying to write one last feature, only to continually be interrupted with superheroing, back to the laptop, rinse and repeat, because that's practically the same as my job!!!!! (minus the cape)
