Power Trip, Part IV JSA Classified #4 Cover Date:  December 2005 Released:  26th October 2005 ⋅ Writers:   Geoff Johns  ⋅ Pencilers:  Amanda Conner   ⋅     ⋅   Inkers:  Jimmy Palmiotti  ⋅  Colourists:  Paul Mounts  ⋅ ⋅  Letterers:  Rob Leigh   ⋅  Editors:  Harvey Richards / Stephen Wacker  ⋅  Continued from part 3 After all the weirdness of the previous few issues, we settled in to find out just what this was all about. Stop me if you've heard this one before, there was a multiverse including a second Earth, an Earth-2 if you will, and there was a bunch of heroes called the Justice Society of  America. When Krypton-2 exploded not only was Kal-L sent to Earth, his cousin sent his only daughter to Earth, who grew up to be Power Girl! Yes her classic origin is now back. We also learn Psycho Pirates (II it seems) background. His father was a psychologist and also the first Psycho ...

Cthulhu Patrol - Doom Patrol #14

Order and Doom Doom Patrol #14 Cover Date:  November 1988 Released:  26th July 1988 ⋅ Writers:   Paul Kupperberg  ⋅ Pencilers:  Erik Larsen  ⋅  ⋅   Inkers:  Jim Sanders  ⋅   Colourists:  Michele Wolfman  ⋅ ⋅  Letterers:  John Workman   ⋅  Editors:  Robert Greenberger  ⋅ Continued from here . We open with a lovely full-page splash of a bandaged Pee Gee telling the Patrol what a massive threat Pythia is to all reality, though spoilers she never shows up in another comic! For anyone, interested Pythia was the title of the Oracle of Delphi, which is why the name will be reused later for one of the Amazon, and by later I mean this very month which might explain why the Lord of Chaos didn't return. Several of the Patrol seemed to be a little too wrapped up in their own subplots to take it seriously until Kara gets a little miffed about how they're not taking this as seriously as they should. Cliff...

100 (ish) reviews and an announcement

Image
Depending on how you count things, and I've not made it easy with all the side projects and distractions,  I've done about a hundred Pee Gee related reviews! Yeah, I didn't expect this either, but I'm happy that I've gotten this far, and I don't plan to give up any time soon.  However... I'd been feeling the grind a little, and I think it's affecting the quality a little, so I'm making a few tweaks to keep things chugging along. First I'm going to reduce the number of posts from eight to six, either having a skip week or a few weeks of just one post for a couple of weeks. I'm also going to stick to either the Early Post-Crisis, Late Post Crisis, or New 52 for the entire month, it hopefully means we'll cover entire stories rather than skipping back and forward.  I'm going to shuffle things a smidge so stories are finished, then we'll start with all this in August, apart from that I'm not planning on changing anything dramatic o...

Flashbacks - Worlds' Finest #0

Image
Beginnings Worlds' Finest #0 Cover Date:  November 2012 Released:  5th September 2012 ⋅ Writers:   Paul Levitz  ⋅ Pencilers:  Kevin Maguire   ⋅     ⋅   Inkers:  Wes Craig  ⋅  Colourists:  Rosemary Cheetham  ⋅ ⋅  Letterers:  Carlos M. Mangual   ⋅  Editors:  Wil Moss  ⋅  When the universe was rebooted into the New 52 it was decided that they wouldn't start with origin stories, instead starting with the heroes being already established. That was carried on to the second wave of launches including Earth 2 and Worlds' Finest, though the later cheated by flashing back to tell how they got to Earth Prime. Earth 2 only extends to a one panel cameo, we'll get to those before the end of the year, so let's look At Worlds' Finest #0. We start off with Helena going out on her first patrol, saving the traditional damsel from a couple of thugs, who as the woman names herself as Robin from Robin H...

Power Trip, Part III JSA Classified #3 Cover Date:  November 2005 Released:  21st September 2005 ⋅ Writers:   Geoff Johns  ⋅ Pencilers:  Amanda Conner   ⋅     ⋅   Inkers:  Jimmy Palmiotti  ⋅  Colourists:  Paul Mounts  ⋅ ⋅  Letterers:  Rob Leigh   ⋅  Editors:  Harvey Richards / Stephen Wacker  ⋅  We start with a very dodgy supervillain, Doctor Houngan, fighting against Huntress, the Helena Bertinelli variety, putting on a good show until Plasmus tries to basically melt her. Luckily at that point Power Girl turns up to save the day! Power Girl then give our plot summary to Huntress as she looks more and more confused as to why she's come to Gotham and tracked her down. Meanwhile Psycho Pirate turns up to the site they're taking Power Girls bioship to, fighting both the Checkmate troopers and Mr Terrific and the Flash (Jay Garrick). It goes as badly as you'd expect with Psycho Pirate ...

Andromeda Strain - JSA Classified #2

Power Trip, Part II JSA Classified #2 Cover Date:  October 2005 Released:  24th August 2005 ⋅ Writers:   Geoff Johns  ⋅ Pencilers:  Amanda Conner   ⋅     ⋅   Inkers:  Jimmy Palmiotti  ⋅  Colourists:  Paul Mounts  ⋅ ⋅  Letterers:  Rob Leigh   ⋅  Editors:  Harvey Richards / Stephen Wacker  ⋅  We start with a little walk and talk as Mr Terrific and the Flash (Jay Garrick) discussing how Power Girls powers are  fluctuating   like crazy and that because she's still (relatively) young she want to figure this out by herself. They we're going to examine the pod that Power Girl arrived to Earth (or at least this century, almost barely her being Atlantean), when they discovered it's been seized by Checkmate and Director Bones. Power Girl however is still feeling a little sorry for herself on the Daily Planet globes in Metropolis. She's soon joined by Jimmy Olsen who snaps her pictu...

Kara Patrol - Doom Patrol #13

Image
Power and Chaos Doom Patrol #13 Cover Date:  October 1988 Released:  28th June 1988 ⋅ Writers:   Paul Kupperberg  ⋅ Pencilers:  Erik Larsen  ⋅  ⋅   Inkers:  Al Gordon  ⋅   Colourists:  Michele Wolfman  ⋅ ⋅  Letterers:  John Workman   ⋅  Editors:  Robert Greenberger  ⋅ As I might have mentioned this before but the joy of a read-along like this is that it takes you places you wouldn't normally visit. Now I'm aware of the Doom Patrol, but apart from the TV show, which is amazing, and the last series, which was okay, I've not read any previous Doom Patrol. Like its spiritual cousin X-Men, which has a complicated relationship with, basically, they started with very similar teams and whilst written to close to copy each other, maybe as they artists worked in the same studio, it's very soap opera like with may subplots running through the entire issue. And into this is thrown Power Girl! Unlike the...

Web of Fear - Power Girl #4

Destiny Power Girl #4 Cover Date:  September 1988 Released:  7th June 1988 ⋅ Writers:   Paul Kupperberg  ⋅ Pencilers:  Rick Hoberg  ⋅  ⋅   Inkers:  Arne Starr  ⋅   Colourists:  Julianna Ferriter  ⋅ ⋅  Letterers:  Bob Pinaha   ⋅  Editors:  Robert Greenberger  ⋅  Continued from Power Girl #3 . This issue is the weird astral space trip that you'd find in a classic Doctor Strange issue, indeed we get some very Dikto-like panels. We get a few pages getting everyone up to speed and then we face the first challenge in this magical realm, a giant wall! After trying brute force and speed to get through the wall, she's helped by a small fluffy imp called Ghy, who seems to be on Kara's side despite looking all evil. They explain that the wall works on least resistance; all she needs to do is walk through the wall and she's all fine. We then go through a forest where she faces all her fears from th...
